With some new recent enquiries about Joeys, we will commence our own Joey Mob for boys and girls aged 6 to 7.5. Activities will include games, cooking, Art and Craft, outdoor activities and loads of fun, but most importantly, the Joeys will learn to Care and Share.

We will meet at the Montmorency Scout Hall, Petrie Park on MountainView Road on Tuesdays from 6pm to 7pm.

Congratulations CP – “Monty Scout of the Year”

Recently, Montmorency Scouts held their Wilma Hawthorne-Smith Annual Recognition and Awards Presentations Night. Wilma was an exceptional Leader who led a Cub Pack at Montmorency for 27 years.

We were honored to have Wilma attend along with Bob Evans, another long-term Leader. Also in attendance were Llew Williams, one of the original builders of the Hall and later a Leader along with Katherine Barling, daughter of the first Leader at Montmorency.

Reports were presented from each Section, Youth Members received a Certificate of Achievement with a record of badges achieved or camps and activities they attended.

SS was our Guest Speaker and she spoke about her journey from Cub Scouts to National Youth Council. She spoke well and gave new parents an understanding of what it means to be a Scout and what she has achieved out of it. She was re-presented with her Scout Medallion while RM and CM were recognised for their Grey Wolf award.

Finally, we ended the night with the awarding of our Wilma Hawthorne-Smith Scout of the Year Award to CP, current Patrol Leader in our Scout Section. Congratulations CP on your Leadership that you show in the Group, helping out whenever needed and making new Scouts feel comfortable on their first activities.

Congratulations SS – Scout Medallion

Mid-last year, SS completed all of the requirements for the Australian Scout Medallion, the highest honour a Scout can achieve, similar to the Queen’s Scout Award for a Venturer Scout. SS was recently invited to attend a Presentation Ceremony along with all other recipients of this award in early May. She attended with her family and Scout Leaders.

Congratulations SS on the work and effort you put into achieving this award and the work you did with the younger Scouts, leading and teaching by example. We look forward to watching you continue your journey through Venturers.

Congratulations CM – Grey Wolf

Early this year, CM, aged 11, was awarded her Grey Wolf, the highest award a Cub Scout can earn. It is the Cub’s equivalent to the Queen Scout Award. CM had to ensure that she completed the following:

The Gold Boomerang
Have attended at least 4 outdoor activities in the past year.
Have attended at least 2 pack councils in the past year
Have completed at least 4 Level Two badges, including one from each category
Have completed a special interest badge
Develop and present a resource for the pack, based on the Jungle Books.

Congratulations CM on completing this high honour and receiving it on your 11th birthday and since, linking to Scouts. We look forward to watching your continued growth in Scouting.

Monty Scouts are back!!

As of the start of Term 2, 2011, the Monty Scouts and their Leaders returned to Montmorency Scout Center to run on their own again.

With several new members coming up from Cubs and other youth members joining in and a great program, the older Scouts are looking forward to teaching the younger Scouts many different things.

With many thanks to the Lower Plenty Scout Group and in particular, Hobbit for the assistance given over the last year while we rebuilt our numbers after last year’s Jamboree.

Plenty Valley Region Scout Camp

The inaugural Plenty Valley Region Camp was held from Friday 11th March to Monday 14th March 2011 at Mafeking Rover Park. Montmorency Scouts attended with about 300 other Scouts.

The activity bases revolved around: Propulsion, Hydration, Gravitation and Locomotion and some of the activities included CAMS Junior Development Program (for Scouts 12 years and over), Billy Karts, BMX Bikes, Crate Stacking and Flying Fox.

Reports back from the Scouts were that the CAMS car driving activity was exceptional.

BIG Camp III

Cubs attended Big Camp at Camp Warringal in March in preparation for Cuboree later this year. Here is TW’s review of the camp…

Big camp was fun and enjoyable. The food was delicious and edible. Some of the things we did were canoeing, painting, listening and helping the environment. The food menu was long but here are some of my favourites: cake, pancakes, ice cream and I can’t name all the rest of my favourites. The best thing was going to Funfields. We went on lots of rides. It was the best fun. The tents were all different sizes. I went home tired from the four days of fun. I hope there will be another camp at least with half the amount of fun.

Bike Ride – November 2010

Last November, the Monty and Lower Plenty Cubs and their families went bike riding from Eltham Lower Park in Eltham to Finns Reserve in Templestowe. After the ride, the Cubs played at the playground. The photos were too good to not post them.

Term 1 of 2011 has started off with plenty of excitement …

Joeys, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers and Leaders are back ready to have heaps of fun, adventure and excitement. We have had many enquiries and new children attending.
Another Grey Wolf was presented. Congratulations to CM for the work she completed over the holidays. An exciting 11th birthday present to have Bagheera and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi present her with her certificates and badges.
A linking ceremony was held in our second week back to allow our older Cubs to link up to Scouts. They will be invested as Scouts very soon. All Cubs attended the Scout meeting where the Scouts had built a bridge over a “river” where the linking Cubs crossed over into a Scout campsite and were welcomed into the new Section. Present were parents of many Cubs who learnt a little more about the linking process and the meaning behind the ritual. Later, the Cubs and Scouts had chariot races and all had heaps of fun together. Friendships were created and allowed the Cubs to see how their knot-tying could be used in games.
Founder’s Day was held with a Cub bike ride and Scout raft race. Those participating had a great time.
A successful Parent-Information Night was held in conjunction with Lower Plenty Scout Group. The parents attending were new to Scouting and learnt more about what we do and what their children would get out of Scouting.
A fundraising BBQ was held very early this year to raise much-needed funds for the Group. Thanks to all of the parents who helped out on the day.

And during the holidays:

The kitchen was finished (just a little trim work and tiles to complete), ready for our children and Leaders to use for the term and also for Groups and individuals hiring the Hall. Special thanks to Pete, Jo and kids for their efforts to complete this.
The former Venturers Den was painted out and now it is being set up as an Activity Room in readiness for the Cubs to use each week.

And finally, next term, our Scouts will return to Monty on Thursday nights. To the Leaders at Lower Plenty Scouts (Hobbit, Wazza, Damo and Kristy) who have helped us over the year with our Scout Troop until we were able to stand on our own again with a few more numbers, thankyou.
